El señor Takazawa ha sido elegido para probar una novedosa tecnología, desarrollada por el ministerio de salud, denominada como Roujin Z (o proyecto Z).

El problema es que nuestro anciano protagonista no ha dado su visto bueno, y la persona que lo cuida (Haruko) tampoco. Pero ya se sabe como son estas cosas, y la desentendida familia de Takazawa le ofrece al gobierno su aprobación.

Mr. Takazawa has been chosen to test a new technology, developed by the Ministry of Health, known as Roujin Z (or Z project).


The problem is that our old protagonist has not given its approval, and the caregiver (Haruko) either. But you know how these things, and Takazawa Family offers government approval.

Roujin Z es un nuevo hardware que se ocupará de los ancianos, dándoles de comer, aseándolos, controlando sus constantes vitales y evitando así cualquier tipo de atención humana…en el futuro no tendremos que cuidar de nuestros mayores.

Proyecto Z se convierte de esta forma en una prisión para Takazawa, quién estará bien servido de atenciones médicas, pero también desprovisto del poco calor humano que le rodea y de toda dignidad.

Haruko, quién dio su palabra de cuidarle y protegerle, luchará contra el sistema, intentando mostrar la carencia de ética que conlleva el experimento.

Roujin Z is new hardware that will take care of the elderly, feeding them, by washing, checking his vitals and avoiding any kind of human attention ... in the future we will not have to take care of our elders.

Z project thus becomes a prison for Takazawa, who will be well served by medical care, but also devoid of the little warmth around you and of all dignity.


Haruko, who gave his word to care for and protect, fight against the system, trying to show the lack of ethics that entails the experiment.

En determinado momento el octogenario logra ponerse en contacto con Haruko, quien, con la ayuda de los ancianos de la residencia donde trabaja, logra contactar y animar al señor Takazawa… pero, para contactar con el mismo, los piratas de la tercera edad desarrollan un software que emula la voz de su difunta esposa. Y aquí es donde empieza realmente la película, cuando Roujin Z se ve poseído por el alma de la mujer.  

Nos encontramos ante una película nada usual, donde la crítica base es el valor de la tercera edad y sus amplios conocimientos, además de la importancia que tiene la dignidad. También nos habla de los peligros tecnológicos y de cómo avanzamos, a pasos agigantados, hacia la deshumanización total. La obra nos deja bien claro que todos, en algún momento, seremos también ancianos.

At one point the octogenarian achieved contact Haruko, who, with the help of the elders of the residence where he works, and encourage fails to contact Mr. Takazawa ... but, to contact it, the pirates of the elderly develop a software that emulates the voice of his late wife. And this is where the movie really begins when Roujin Z is possessed by the soul of women.


We are facing nothing unusual film where basic criticism is the value of seniors and their extensive knowledge, as well as the importance of dignity. He also talks about the dangers of technology and how we move forward by leaps and bounds, to the total dehumanization. The film makes it clear that everyone, at some point, we will be too old.

Roujin Z puede considerarse un film de ciencia ficción Cyber Punk, pues cumple con el requerimiento de un mundo tecnológicamente dañino, un control autoritario, lucha de clases y un futuro distópico.

El guión está firmado por el inigualable Katsuhiro Otomo (padre de Akira) y la dirección la lleva Hiroyuki Kitakubo, quien fue responsable de el corto “A tale of two robots” y quien también trabajó en el afamado film de Otomo.

Solo con estos dos nombres ya se podría entender la calidad de la cinta, pero es que el diseñador de personajes es Hisashi Eguchi (quién se inspiró en su mujer para crear el retrato de la difunta esposa del señor Takazawa) y el director de arte fue el tristemente fallecido Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Páprika, Magnetic Rose, Tokio Godfathers…).

Roujin Z can be considered a science fiction film and Cyber ​​Punk, because it meets the requirement of a technologically harmful world, authoritarian control, class struggle and a dystopian future.

The script is signed by the incomparable Katsuhiro Otomo (Akira's father) and address leads Kitakubo Hiroyuki, who was responsible for the short film "A tale of two robots" and who also worked at the famed film Otomo.


Only with these two names and could understand the quality of the tape, but is that the designer is Hisashi Eguchi (who was inspired by his wife to create a portrait of the late wife of Mr. Takazawa) and the art director was the sadly deceased Satoshi Kon (Perfect Blue, Paprika, Magnetic Rose, Tokyo Godfathers ...).

Para finalizar, y redondeando en un elenco de artistas casi sin parangón, debemos añadir que Takeshi Honda se encargó de la animación (cuyo trabajo más significativo, desde mi punto de vista, es Ghost in the Shell).

Así pues, nos encontramos ante una película de animación con un acabado y un diseño excepcional, mencionando que no hace uso de la tecnología digital, siendo un producto artesanal al 100%. Todo en la cinta es bastante meritorio, aunque jamás llega a las cotas de calidad de los films más significativos del personal antes nombrado.

Finally, and rounding in a cast of almost unparalleled artists, we must add that Takeshi Honda was responsible for the animation (the most significant work, from my point of view, is Ghost in the Shell).


So we face an animated film with a finish and exceptional design, noting that it does not use digital technology, being a 100% handmade product. Everything in the film is quite commendable, but never reach the heights of quality staff most significant films named above.

Roujin Z fue lanzada al mercado japonés en 1991, llegando casi cuatro años después a Europa. Actualmente se puede encontrar en DVD y BluRay, siendo de las pocas películas “Manga” realmente remasterizadas. (No encontraréis ni una mota de ruido, y se muestra con un colorido y definición excepcional).

Roujin Z es una película recomendada para gente con inquietudes mentales, pues es un film tranquilo y con mensaje. A parte de esto, encontraremos humor e incluso acción, así que no penséis en un entretenimiento puramente cerebral, pero enfocarlo como una obra que está más cerca del cine de autor que del cine comercial.

Roujin Z was released to the Japanese market in 1991, reaching nearly four years later to Europe. Currently you can find on DVD and BluRay, being of the few "Manga" really remastered films. (You will not find even a speck of noise, and is shown with a colorful and unique definition).


Roujin Z is a movie recommended for people with mental health concerns, it is a quiet film with a message. Apart from this, find humor and even action, so do not think on a purely cerebral entertainment, but approach it as a work that is closer to that auteur of commercial cinema.

Desde mi punto de vista es una de las películas Cyber Punk más originales que se han realizado nunca (No recuerdo ninguna otra con un protagonista anciano encamado durante todo el film…), y es un relato de ciencia ficción muy bueno.

From my point of view is one of the most original Cyber Punk movies that have been made ever (I do not remember any other with a bedridden elderly protagonist throughout the film ...), and is a great science fiction story.
